Getting the most out of this site

This site has been developed for someone with little previous experience with adjustment. We hope that more experienced union activists will also find the information useful. The site has been written to take someone through the adjustment process. It explains what actions should be taken, and when and what decisions need to be made when and by whom. It also provides some background information to help with understanding what is happening and why. As you go through the site, you will learn about taking the lead in managing the process and developing a union plan of action. That plan might include:

  • fighting back to reverse the lay-off decision
  • negotiating improvements to the adjustment provisions in your collective agreement
  • proposing alternatives to lay-offs
  • setting up a joint adjustment committee with the employer and governments to provide services to displaced workers

The site is not intended to replace the support and advice of your regional or national union representatives. It should complement their assistance and answer questions they may not have time to help you with.

Moving around the site

You have several choices for making your way through the information on the site.

  • you can always come back to the opening page at any time by clicking on the home button at the top (the house).
  • you can also go to the start of each section by clicking on the section title at the top of each page.
  • you can visit the sections listed at the top in order, starting with Take the Lead. Once you open a section, on the left side of the screen there will be a list of the topics in that section. You can either click on them to go directly there or scroll down the page to that topic.
  • you can go to the seven pitfalls of adjustment and follow the links. This approach will take you to key areas but will not take you through the whole site depending on what links you follow.

You can also find your own way around the site by using the search function and putting in a key word. This will give you a list of all of the times that word shows up on the site. You can then click on those that look the most interesting to you.

Getting more information

At various points in your passage through the website, you will see links to three kinds of additional information:

Worker-centred approaches. These descriptions have been developed to help you see in a snapshot the main things labour looks for on that subject.

Links . These lead you to contact information and other information on key topics on the Internet.

Case studies. These are descriptions of situations where labour has worked to make adjustment effective.

Checklists. These are intended to be printed and kept at hand as you work to make sure you are not forgetting anything important on that topic.

Providing comments

The CLC welcomes your comments, complaints, and suggestions to improve this site. You can either go to the "About Adjustment" link at the top of each page to make general comments or you can click on any of the places where it says "comments on this item". We also welcome suggestions of additional resources and advice for brothers and sisters experiencing similar challenges. The CLC is grateful to the Department of Human Resources and Skills Development for their generous support in creating this site.
